Joseph W. Furr, ASLAJoseph W. Furr, ASLA, APA, STMA is the managing member of Joseph Furr Design Studio, LLC, a landscape architectural and land planning firm located in downtown Baton Rouge. Joey obtained a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from LSU in 1986 and has remained in Baton Rouge throughout his career. He served as a teaching assistant in advanced graphics, a guest lecturer and project juror many times at Louisiana State University. He was the Principal in Charge (PIC) of 12 projects that have received awards by the state’s professional association, ASLA.

From 1986 to 1987 he worked for the Caplinger Group, Ltd., a landscape architecture and planning firm in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he worked on numerous golf course community master plans and large-scale waterfront projects as a project team member.

From 1987 to 1996 he was a principal at Reich Associates Landscape Architects and Land Planners (RA) in Baton Rouge. While at RA, he was Principal in Charge of three of the firm’s ASLA award-winning projects, The East Baton Rouge Urban Forest Management Plan, The 1995 - 2010 LA State Parks Plan and the renovation of the St. Aloysius Church Gardens. Other notable projects he managed as PIC while at Reich Associates include the City Park/University Lakes Management Plan and master plans for Episcopal High School, University United Methodist Church and Camp Istrouma.

In 1996 Joey founded JFDS in order to focus on site master planning and detail design. JFDS has produced several Louisiana riverfront master plans across South Louisiana and has developed many major parks projects in Louisiana and Mississippi. In 2002 Joey was the lead designer of the grounds at the Shaw Group Corporate Headquarters, which received a Louisiana Chapter, ASLA Merit Award in 2007. As the lead planner with a team of architects and engineers, Joey received ASLA awards for the Tunica Hills State Preservation Area and the New Orleans Upriver Greenway Corridor Plans. Joey also led the JFDS design team for the award-winning Lighthouse Memorial Plaza in downtown Gulfport, Mississippi, which is a new center for cultural activities in the CBD. Joey has had a great impact on the Baton Rouge downtown landscape and understands the needs of urban design through first-hand experience with downtown projects including: North Boulevard Town Square, a Louisiana Chapter ASLA Merit Award winner; St. James Episcopal Church, also a Louisiana Chapter ASLA Merit Award winner; City Plaza, II City Plaza, First Presbyterian Church and, most recently, River Park, the new 35-acre mixed-use development along the Mississippi Riverfront that is currently in the master planning stage. In 2005 Joey reinforced his commitment to downtown Baton Rouge by purchasing and renovating the building located at 635 Main Street as the offices for JFDS as well as other Baton Rouge firms. This project, designed by Joey, was awarded a Good Growth Award in 2006.
